About the exhibition

The “DOLL ART” exhibition in the CEH “Manege” was planned long ago and we’ve been preparing for it for many. That was the way of constant search and deliberate experiment.

Molding the event devoted to doll art in general we begin to unite those things which should have been united long ago – all the doll typology: from folk twisted dolls to Chinese dolls of shadows theatre, from art dolls to artel dolls, from antique to fashion doll. The general picture of today doll art seems to us as a tapestry, as far as all the doll types exist independently and unconnectedly, which doesn’t exclude oppositional tendencies. A doll as an art-object, as a material for art history investigation is the most unpredictable giving a wide range of interpretations. Nevertheless the fact of such an exhibition’s existence states that the object of it with its entire diversity is a doll.

We have invited into this project everyone who shares our position in understanding doll art – collectors, gallery-holders, museum workers, art historians and artists (doll-makers, sculptors, photographers, designers. painters) – to demonstrate the diversity of the topic.

For the first time to organize such a huge doll exhibition and to reveal the whole capacity of the topic we’ve hired a tutor and art manager. The result of the dialogue between the artist working with space and creating the concept of the project ant the exposition on the one hand and the artists trusting their works to the tutor on the other hand is the main segment of the exhibition “Doll in the context of culture”. The other segment of the exhibition is the international fair “WORLD DOLLS”, in frames of which artists from 26 countries will show their works.

Till this time all the exhibitions held in Russia have been personal, thematic or retrospective. We have great experience and a long list of diverse projects. But there has been no exhibition like this – showing the tendencies of DOLL ART. It is not a museum exhibition with canonized and best works, but a living exposition showing the current creative process. The process is puzzling and not one-sized, but incredibly amazing, namely because it’s alive.

Our exhibition is only a first step to the desired aim, we don’t have to cover all the possible displays of doll art. Moreover, on the opposite, the lack of too-much-of-visual-information will set on the development of doll art for the future.
